Synopsis
1930-40년대 일본의 동아시아 팽창정책으로 더 많은 식민지를 위해 전쟁을 벌이는 동안, 조선에서 황민화 정책의 일환으로 조선인들에게 창씨개명을 강요하고 조선어를 금지한다. 일본의 감시와 탄압 속에 ‘조선어학회’는 조선어를 지키기 위해 사전을 편찬하려 하고, 영생여고보 학생, 이슬은 우리말로 시를 쓰는 시인이 되고 싶어한다. 경찰들이 이슬이 쓴 일기를 구실로 조선어학회 관련자들을 연행해 재판에 회부한다.
In the 1930s and 1940s, while Japan wages war for more colonies due to its expansionist policies in East Asia, it forces the Korean people to abandon Korean names and adopt Japanese names instead as part of its Japanization policy. Under Japanese surveillance and oppression, the Joseon Language Society attempts to compile a dictionary in defense of the Joseon language, and YI Seul, a student at Yeongsaeng Girls' High School, aspires to become a poet who writes poems in Joseon language. Under the pretext of YI Seul's diary, the police arrest the members of the Joseon Language Society and put them on trial.
Project Concept
<지우개와 연필>은 1940년대 조선어학회 사건을 중심으로 한 일제의 민족말살정책을 다룹니다. 일본의 조선어 탄압 정책과 창씨개명은 조선인들이 겪었던 문화적 폭력의 단면을 보여줍니다. 그리고 주인공인 학생들이 겪는 갈등과 선택, 그 안에서 저항과 존엄을 지키려는 노력을 통해 동시대를 살아가는 청소년들이 자신의 삶과 연결 지어 볼 수 있습니다.
<Eraser and Pencil> explores Japan’s policy of ethnic erasure during its colonial rule over Korea, focusing on the 1940s Joseon Language Society Incident. The film sheds light on the cultural violence inflicted upon Koreans through Japan’s suppression of the Korean language and its forced name changes. By following the struggles, choices, and resistance of student protagonists, the story invites today’s students to reflect on their own lives in relation to these historical injustices.
Character
이슬 (목소리 연기: 정은순) - 조선 해방을 꿈꾸는 저항시인들의 시를 한글로 읽으며 자신도 시인이 되고 싶어하는 문학을 사랑하는 영생여고보의 학생.
정태일 (목소리 연기: 목진학) - 영생여고보 전 선생님이자 조선어학회 사전편찬 위원회 소속. 학교에서 조선어를 가르쳤고 조선어학회와 연루되었다는 이유로 경찰에 연행된다.
신화정 (목소리 연기: 정은순) - 영생여고보 학생, 이슬 친구. 가난을 벗어나고자 통역관이 되고 싶어 한다.
마쓰무라 헤이지로 / 노병준 (목소리 연기: 이코 마스다) - 순사. 이슬의 일기장을 발견해 정태일과 그 외 조선어학회 사람들을 연행하고 고문함.
미나미 쇼인 (목소리 연기: 이코 마스다) - 조선에서 근무하는 일본인 순사
가야마 슌주 / 최춘수 (목소리 연기: 임호영) - 영생여고보에서 일본어를 국어로 가르치는 창씨개명을 한 선생님.

YI Seul (Voice: JUNG Eunsoon) - A student at Yeongsaeng Girls’ High School. She loves literature, enjoys reading in Korean the poems of resistance poets who dream of liberating Joseon from the Japanese Empire, and aspires to become a poet herself.
JEONG Tae-il (Voice: MOK Jinhak) - A former teacher at Yeongsaeng Girls’ High School and a member of the Dictionary Committee of the Joseon Language Society. He was arrested by the police for teaching Korean at the school and for his involvement in the Joseon Language Society.
SHIN Hwa-jeong (Voice: JUNG Eunsoon) - A student at Yeongsaeng Girls’ High School and YI Seul’s friend. Hoping to escape poverty, she aspires to become an interpreter.
MATSUMURA Heijiro / NOH Byeong-jun (Voice: Ikko Masuda) - A police officer. After reading YI Seul’s diary, he arrests and tortures JEONG Tae-il and other members of the Joseon Language Society.
MINAMI Shoin (Voice: Ikko Masuda) - A Japanese police officer serving in Joseon.
KAYAMA Shunju / CHOI Chun-su (Voice: IM Hoyoung) - A teacher who has adopted a Japanese name and teaches Japanese as the national language at Yeongsaeng Girls’ High School.
